De-silting Dam One Project

Why is this project needed?
Dam One is an artificially created water course, situated just beneath the visitors’ chalets, at Chilinda camp. Since its construction over forty years ago, the dam has provided a beautiful focus for residents and visitors alike. Over the years, the dam has gradually become shallower, because run-off silt has built up on the floor. Recently, this process has speeded up, due in part to a commerical logging operation, which continues to expose large areas of disturbed surface to rapid wash-off erosion during the rainy season. The trout population is also being affected by this clogging-up process. Dam one has become a wonderful asset for the Chilinda camp. In addition to its aesthetic value, the feature provides a constant supply of water for the many animals frequenting the area.

How will this project be implemented?
Initially, to trial alternative methods of extracting the silt and intrusive vegetation, using shovels, buckets, chains, a pontoon, man power and tractor power with a view to minimising costs. If these prove inadequate, it may become necessary to hire a digger (not costed at this stage).
