Why is this project needed?
Since 2005, the Nyika-Vwaza (UK) Trust has hosted an annual evening in London towards the end of the year for our supporters. The last four evenings have been held at the Royal Geographical Society, as will be the case on Tuesday 8 November 2011. These evenings are now recognised amongst our supporters as our “Signature Event”, the principal elements being a Report by our Chairman on the activities of the Trusts followed by an appropriate lecture by an eminent person. There is time for socialising and for the purchase of merchandise. The evenings are usually attended by around 200 people. It is an important occasion on which we seek to promote the work of the Trusts and encourage on-going giving.
Although costs are kept to a minimum (fortunately the lecturers have never asked for a fee) and a modest admission charge is levied (currently £18 per person), nevertheless the costs of hiring the RGS and providing hospitality minimises any surplus that we might make. We are reluctant to move from the RGS as it is an excellent venue, conveniently located in London with facilities that suit our requirements and those of our supporters. In addition, we would like to encourage students and others to attend by offering complimentary admission in order to promote as wide an appreciation as possible of the importance of the Nyika National Park and of the Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve. In order to offer complimentary admissions and enhance the financial surplus from the evening, we are seeking to divest ourselves of the costs of hiring the venue and of providing hospitality.
How will this project be implemented?
We will continue our association with the RGS and have already booked the venue for Tuesday 6 November 2012. The RGS accords the Trust its favourable charity rates. Our hospitality is limited to one free drink per person with the bar remaining open to those who wish to purchase additional drinks. We seek a sponsor to pick up these and related costs and we will be happy to publicize the sponsorship both during the evening and in our biannual newsletters.
Our request
We seek a sponsor who will provide £3,000 for 2011 and probably the same for 2012.
