Three Forests Access Project

Why is this project needed?
Within the Nyika National Park there are three forests which used to be readily accessible to visitors and researchers, but in recent years the accesses and related facilities have been neglected. The forests are Zovo Chipolo and Chowo, both on the west, and Fingira Rock towards the south of the Park. Road accesses and trails within the forests have become overgrown, signs dilapidated and parking areas unkempt. It is important to restore and refresh these facilities for the benefit of tourists and researchers and historians. The frequent arrival of people to these sites will deter poachers whilst adding to the visitors’ enjoyment and greater appreciation and understanding of the precious flora and fauna of the Nyika National Park. A special attraction is the cave in the Fingira Rock forest which is of archaeological interest as it was used by hunter-gatherers over 3000 years ago and geometric rock paintings are still visible. That visitors should leave the Park with memories of good and interesting experiences helps to spread the network of people who care that it must continue to flourish.

How will this project be implemented?
As required at each site, access roads will be cleared and repaired, signs smartened, car parks made fit for purpose, and forest trails cleared and clearly signed. In addition, leaflets will be printed about each of the forests. We would be happy to acknowledge a donor’s sponsorship on the leaflets.

Our request
We ask for an annual grant/donation of £2,600 for three to five years to restore and thereafter maintain the accesses and trails of the three forests and to produce a supply of leaflets.
