Women's Co-operative Maize Mill Project

Why is this project needed?
A women’s cooperative, established in 2004, runs a well-organised commercial maize mill based at Chilinda camp. In addition to providing much needed supplementary income, the mill forms a base for a thriving community of 400 people.

The current machinery located in the ‘Kaulime’ maize mill is very near the end of its life expectancy of 10 years.

The maize mill grinds the kernels with which the camp workers are supplied. Maize is the main dietary component of all members of the community.

To supply ground maize meal to this remote plateau would create considerable difficulty for all stake holders. Whereas traditional mortar and pestle grinding is possible, it would not be a practical solution for the great majority of hard working personnel here, who quite often return home after dusk.

How will this project be implemented?
The present motor will be replaced. A resident Department of National Parks and Wildlife mechanic is responsible for regularly maintaining the machinery, and is endeavouring to keep the current machine in good working order. However, the number of breakdowns are steadily increasing and we have been advised that its remaining working life is limited.

Our request
We request an urgent grant/donation of £2,500 to replace the existing machine before it breaks down completely.
